Lufthansa and Swiss expand range of “climate tickets”

The Lufthansa Group is expanding its ticket offer for more sustainable flying to include long-haul flights. The Swiss subsidiary Swiss is also following suit.
From December 4, the so-called "Green Fares" will be bookable on almost all of the Group's flights, as Lufthansa and Swiss announced on Wednesday. Passengers will be able to select the new fares at a higher price than conventional tickets for 850,000 Lufthansa Group flights directly in the booking process. The compensation of flight-related CO2 emissions is already included in the price.
Swiss first introduced the "Green Fares" on certain short-haul routes in August 2022 and has continuously expanded them since then, according to the Swiss press release. Only the "Green Fare" can be booked on domestic flights. According to the statement, around five percent of Swiss passengers actively opted for more sustainable travel last year, and up to 20 percent in the Business segment.
The fares include compensation for the CO2 emissions generated during the flight. A smaller proportion of between 10 and 20 percent is achieved with sustainable biofuel (SAF), which has a lower CO2 footprint than conventional kerosene and can be easily refueled. The remaining CO2 emissions are to be offset by climate projects. The "Green Fares" can be booked on all flights operated by Lufthansa companies with the exception of Eurowings, which has its own program.
Critics argue that CO2 emissions cannot be undone with compensation. Furthermore, flights are responsible for other climate impacts in addition to pure kerosene consumption.
According to a study by the environmental organization "Atmosfair", global passenger air traffic has so far clearly missed its climate targets. German airlines have hardly succeeded in reducing kerosene consumption and thus mitigating CO2 emissions and other environmental damage.
