On Saturday evening, Geneva City Council approved the deficit-ridden 2025 budget. It shows a deficit of 70.9 million francs. The budget, which was supported by the left, was adopted with 47 votes in favor and 28 against.

The City of Geneva must nevertheless submit a plan to the State Council on how it can achieve a balanced budget again from next spring, the center wrote in a communiqué in the night

Christina Kitsos, President of Geneva's Social Democratic Party and head of the city's social welfare department, defended her department's policy. She pointed out that inaction in the area of childcare would cost dearly.

The budget allows services to be maintained despite the tax reduction decided at cantonal level, the Greens announced. The party will "closely monitor" the return to a balanced budget planned for 2033.

The draft budget for 2025 presented in September 2024 envisaged a deficit of CHF 63.4 million. The amended draft budget, which was approved by the City Council's Finance Committee in mid-November, envisages a deficit of CHF 72.9 million.
