Representatives of the governments and parliaments of Lucerne, Obwalden and Nidwalden left on Tuesday at 3 p.m. on a train bound for Bern. In their luggage they have three standing initiatives calling for the early construction of an underground through station in Lucerne.

The popular initiatives, which were unanimously approved by the parliaments of Lucerne, Obwalden and Nidwalden, will be presented to the National Council and Council of States at 4:30 p.m. in the Federal Palace. They demand that the through station be in operation by 2040. Central Switzerland is sending out a strong signal with these state initiatives, said Lucerne's Director of Construction Fabian Peter (FDP).

Lucerne has a terminus station with only two tracks. It is therefore not possible to expand the rail service. A second, underground station with access from two sides should eliminate the bottlenecks.

The realization of the CHF 3.3 billion project is not uncontroversial due to the costs. There are fears that it could only be realized as a terminus station rather than a through station.
