The Federal Office of Culture (FOC) is supporting research projects on provenance in 14 Swiss museums with CHF 1.1 million for the period 2025-2026. Eight of these are researching archaeological cultural assets or those with a colonial origin. Six museums are receiving financial support for research into potential Nazi-looted art.

34 museums and institutions had submitted a grant application, as the BAK announced on Tuesday. It was the first time that the majority of applications concerned objects from a colonial or archaeological context.

Eight museums have received contributions for research in this area. The highest contributions of CHF 100,000 each went to the Basel Museum of Antiquities and the Ludwig Collection, the Basel Museum of Cultures and the Museum Bibel+Orient in Fribourg.

Six museums and institutions are receiving financial support to investigate whether cultural assets are Nazi-looted art. According to the press release, the largest contribution here is also 100,000 Swiss francs. This will go to the Kunstmuseum Bern and the Musée historique in Lausanne.

The BAK has been supporting public and private museums with provenance research since 2016. This funding was initially intended exclusively for research into possible looted art from the Nazi era. Since 2018, the funding has also included research into cultural assets from colonial and archaeological contexts.
