In future, it should be easier to install small wind turbines outside the building zone. This is what the Council of States is demanding. On Wednesday, it approved an initiative from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden.

The decision was made by 26 votes to 12. The National Council will deal with the initiative next.

"The wind always blows here," said Innerrhoden Councillor of States Daniel Fässler (center). His region is "definitely suitable" for the installation of small wind turbines.

Specifically, the initiative proposes changes to the Spatial Planning Act so that the construction of small wind turbines up to 30 meters in height outside the building zone can be promoted more strongly. The reason given for this is the current hurdles to obtaining approval for such installations. "The expansion of electricity generation using renewable energies is being slowed down by the very restrictive federal legislation," the written documents state.
