Lightning storms tear across Switzerland

Switzerland experienced one of its biggest storms in years overnight Tuesday — lightning, hail, heat and high winds — that diverted flights, trains and affected residents.
At least 70,000 lightning bolts across Switzerland were counted overnight (Keystone SDA).

Tens of thousands of lightning bolts were counted in Switzerland overnight — about 70,000 by 5 a.m. Wednesday, according to Meteonews Switzerland.

For the canton of Bern, the weather service reported 7,365 lightning bolts by Wednesday morning. Another 6,268 lightning bolts were counted in the canton of Zurich, 5,526 in Vaud and 4,301 in the canton of Lucerne. In the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, on the other hand, only 24 flashes were counted.

Meteonews measured the strongest hurricane gusts at the Uetliberg ZH measuring station at 144 kilometers per hour (km/h), the weather service announced on Wednesday morning via Twitter. For locations below 800 meters above sea level, SRF Meteo reported wind speeds of 125 km/h in Wädenswil ZH and Steckborn TG on Tuesday night. It also hailed in several areas. According to SRF Meteo, the most precipitation fell in Faido TI and Oron VD with around 31 millimeters.

Fribourg woman struck by lightning

According to the police, a woman was struck by lightning in Villars-sur-Glâne FR on Tuesday evening and had to be taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A check-in stop was imposed at Zurich Airport for one hour on Tuesday evening for security reasons. Flights that were supposed to arrive in Geneva Tuesday evening were diverted to Paris, among other locations. Swiss trains were also paused or diverted to avoid accidents due to the storm winds.

On Tuesday afternoon parts of Switzerland hit 37.6 degrees Celsius (99.7 F) — a new record for 2023.
