The Japanese beetle has been discovered in Kloten ZH, the first population north of the Alps. This invasive pest threatens crops and green spaces. The canton of Zurich has taken measures to eradicate the beetle. The beetle was discovered a few days ago and immediate eradication measures have been taken. The public is asked to help, as the beetle can also be found in private gardens. The infestation in Kloten is currently still manageable, but swift and decisive action is needed to successfully eradicate the pest. A watering ban for lawns and green spaces has been imposed until the end of September to prevent female beetles from laying their eggs in wet soils. Plants that are hosts to the Japanese beetle, such as roses, fruit trees and berry bushes, will be treated with an insecticide until the end of July, including in private gardens. Green waste, compost, plants with roots in soil or organic substrate and soil material may not be transported out of Kloten. The Japanese beetle can cause significant damage to plants and green spaces, as it feeds on around 300 plants from different plant families, including berries, fruit trees, vines, maize, roses, maple, birch and linden trees.
