The Formal Establishment of the Kita Initiative

The Kita Initiative has been established. The initiative, called "For a good and affordable family-complementary childcare for all", was announced by the Federal Chancellery on Wednesday. It calls for parents to spend no more than 10% of their income on childcare for their children. This includes not only daycare and after-school care, but also family daycare and other forms of family- and school-complementary care. Currently, many parents cannot afford such care, which often leads to women with children having to give up their jobs, resulting in lower wages and pensions. The Federal Chancellery has confirmed that 102,238 of the 102,617 signatures submitted on 5 July are valid, making the initiative formally established. The Federal Council will now consider the initiative.
