One week after the devastating storm in La Chaux-de-Fonds NE, clean-up and reconstruction efforts are underway. Priority is given to securing roofs to prevent tiles and chimneys from falling. On Saturday afternoon, car cranes were seen extending their gondolas to secure roofs in the Rue Numa-Droz and Rue Fritz-Courvoisier, where famous personalities of the city live. The population is repeatedly asked to move as little as possible to avoid unstable objects falling on their heads. The security also includes stabilizing elements such as chimneys or ventilation. The Fire and Rescue Service of the Neuchâtel Mountains (SISMN) can count on the support of corps from other cantons and municipalities. Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Fribourg and Biel have quickly offered their services. Due to the security situation, two important events in the 37,000-inhabitant city will be cancelled in the coming days: the street art festival at the Plage des Six Pompes, which regularly attracts between 80,000 and 100,000 people, and the celebrations for August 1st. The Neuchâtel municipalities have invited the inhabitants of La Chaux-de-Fonds to participate in their events for the national holiday on Monday or Tuesday. The building damage is estimated at 70 to 90 million francs. 4000 to 5000 of the 7500 buildings in the affected area were affected by the weather event that caused the death of one person. Private insurers must cover damages to vehicles in the millions. The household insurance for damage in the house is also affected. In the forests, at least 1600 hectares were damaged by the storm with wind speeds of over 200 km/h.
