Viola Amherd, the Swiss Defence Minister, spoke at the 1st August celebration in Lucerne on Monday evening. She said that independence and security are part of the Swiss DNA, and that security is not just about troops and weapons, but also a feeling. She noted that the Swiss have been living in their original form for 175 years, while all the countries around them have gone through many changes. She encouraged the Swiss to use their tools of democracy and foresight to maintain their independence and security. Amherd also took time to take selfies with the public before her speech, despite being delayed by 30 minutes. The celebration in Lucerne was organised by the 31/07 association, which is affiliated with the Die Mitte party, and began with folk performances in the afternoon.
