Beat Jans projects a 10% rise in refugees in 2024, calling for urgent measures to accommodate 3,000 more people in Swiss asylum centers.
Justice Minister Beat Jans anticipates a 10% increase in refugees in 2024, equating to 3,000 more individuals requiring accommodation in federal asylum centers. Speaking on SRF radio and television’s “Samstagsrundschau” program, Jans noted that the influx is expected to rise significantly during the autumn and winter months.
The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) reported a shortage of 2,400 beds in Switzerland to accommodate the incoming refugees. To address the growing demand, Jans stated that the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) is in contact with the army and cantons to explore further cooperation. Cantons are set to receive funds to provide additional accommodation, such as civil defense facilities, though some of these need refurbishment. The search for new accommodation options is ongoing.
Jans expressed hope that parliament would approve supplementary credit to ensure more funds for asylum infrastructure. Without additional financial resources, it would be challenging to provide more civil protection centers, potentially leading to more applicants being deported to the cantons. This shift could create further complications, as cantons would have to assume asylum procedures earlier, slowing down and increasing the cost of asylum decisions.
