Members of the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) over the weekend launched a new poster campaign for the federal elections in Switzerland this autumn. For the first time, a Swiss political party is using a fictitious photo that was created with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).
Swiss study: AI is more apt at spreading fake news than humans
The image, which was first published on Sunday, shows suspected climate activists in orange vests sitting on the ground on a street in a city center. Vehicles are parked in front of them, first and foremost an ambulance with blue lights.
That scene never existed. It is made up of different photos.
The FDP wants to use the poster to denounce the “destructive actions” of climate activists the party announced. Instead of road blockades, they say constructive solutions are required.
The FDP is breaking new ground with the poster, it said. The political party is generally positive about the use of technology, but it has also in the past spoken about the intentional deception to the public some technology has used. For this reason, the FDP has noted on all their posters that the campaign uses AI to generate its images.
According to the party, release of the posters on Sunday is part of a larger umbrella campaign. The campaign, which focuses on the topics of the economy, security of supply and pension provision, was launched via numerous billboards throughout Switzerland and on social media.
