International Labor Organization (ILO) Director Gilbert Houngbo has called on Switzerland to ratify the Convention against Violence and Harassment at Work. Switzerland must assume its international responsibility, he said.

So far, the ILO has not interfered in national debates, Houngbo said in an interview with “Le Temps” published on Tuesday. He hopes that Switzerland will ratify the convention.

Houngbo admitted that Switzerland already has national laws. But she must set a good example – especially as a member of the UN Security Council.

The Legal Commission of the Council of States will discuss this a second time on Tuesday. The Council of States decided last autumn not to go into the bill. The National Council approved the federal decision for approval in December.

The Convention provides a legal prohibition against violence and harassment in the workplace. It also mentions preventive measures as well as support and remedial measures. The ILO adopted it in 2019. To date, 31 ILO member States have ratified it. So far, no Member State has rejected it. It has already come into force in Italy, El Salvador and the Central African Republic.
