The rail strike in France, beginning Thursday evening and ending Monday morning, is expected to disrupt Swiss train services significantly. SNCF, the French state railroad, anticipates cancellations of about half of its long-distance trains. SBB urges travelers to consult the online timetable before their journey.

Train managers responsible for ticket inspections and security are leading the strike, coinciding with a school vacation weekend in major French cities, affecting an estimated one million travelers. SNCF commits to publishing a comprehensive strike timetable online before each strike day, with additional updates provided via SMS.

TGV Lyria, the operator of high-speed trains, will cancel five routes connecting Paris with Geneva, Lausanne, Basel, and Zurich on Friday. Details for weekend cancellations will be available on Thursday.

The strike follows unfulfilled promises by railway operators, leading to union action. Despite improvements promised by Deutsche Bahn after a previous strike, grievances remain. SNCF Voyages’ head, Christophe Fanichet, finds the strike “incomprehensible,” highlighting efforts to meet demands, including job creation.
