13th pension to be paid out as a “thirteenth” according to the Federal Council

The 13th AHV pension, which will be introduced from 2026, is to be paid out as a "thirteenth" and not as a monthly supplement. The Federal Council has set this as a benchmark. However, the details are still open.
A payment as a 13th pension instead of a supplement to the current twelve annual pensions would be technically feasible, said Social Affairs Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider on Wednesday in Bern in response to a question from journalists. It was a question of how to proceed in the case of retirements, divorces and deaths during the year.
Baume-Schneider also said that the "thirteenth" is more likely to be paid out at the end of each year. Whether a pro rata contribution will be paid out after a death or retirement during the year still needs to be clarified.
