Last season, piste rescue services treated 14,000 people in Swiss ski resorts after an accident. 80 percent of accidents occurred while skiing. This is shown by the injury transport statistics of the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention.
15 percent of the accidents occurred while snowboarding and four percent while sledging, as reported by the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BFU) on Tuesday. In a third of snowboarding accidents, wrists and forearms were injured. In 39 percent of skiing accidents, knee injuries were involved.
The rescue services registered a head injury in every tenth accident. It is encouraging that almost everyone now wears a helmet on the slopes. According to the BFU, this reduces the risk of a serious head injury by a third.
Over 90 percent of accidents on snow sports slopes are self-inflicted. Skiers and snowboarders often overestimate their own abilities. The BFU recommends adapting your speed to your own ability and the conditions.
Inadequate or incorrectly maintained equipment can also lead to injuries. The ski bindings should therefore be adjusted and checked by a specialist before the season, wrote the BFU. Skis and snowboards should be checked and maintained regularly.
