A whooping cough epidemic has already led to 20 deaths among children in France since the beginning of the year. Eight adults suffering from whooping cough have also died, although the disease was not the main cause of death in these cases, the national health authority announced on Tuesday.
Whooping cough is a highly contagious viral disease that is often harmless, but can lead to serious complications in babies and can sometimes be fatal.
In France, as in many other countries, whooping cough has been on the rise again for several months. Other infectious diseases such as measles are also becoming more widespread again.
French doctors regret that the vaccination of infants against whooping cough is not yet sufficiently common. The vaccination has also been recommended to pregnant women for several years in order to immunize the newborn.
The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has also observed an increase in cases of whooping cough in Switzerland since January 2024. According to the data, complications occurred in less than two percent of cases with a known course in the current year.
