Over 20,000 shooting enthusiasts celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Swiss Shooting Sport Federation in Aarau at the weekend. The three-day celebrations concluded on Sunday with a parade through the old town of Aarau.
The Shooting Sport Association (SSV) was particularly proud of markswoman Chiara Leone, who won a gold medal at this year's Olympic Games in Paris. Federal Councillor Albert Rösti and Olympic champion Leone took part in the parade in a carriage, as the SSV announced on Sunday.
The other Swiss Olympic medal winners in shooting were also honored with standing ovations. These included Audrey Gogniat (bronze, Paris 2024) and Nina Christen (gold and bronze, Tokyo 2021).
"Part of society and the state"
The shooting sports association is not just about sport, Rösti emphasized in a speech at the festival on Sunday. "In Switzerland, shooting is a part of society and the state - and an expression of our culture of freedom," said Rösti, according to the speech text. "I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that one wouldn't exist without the other."
On Saturday, the focus was on the final competitions in rifle and pistol shooting. 800 club and amateur athletes competed against experienced top shooters. Participation in the grand final in Aarau was partly decided by lot. While half of the participants in the final qualified through their results, the other half were chosen by lot.
