The year just ended was the second warmest in Switzerland since systematic records began. This is according to an analysis by SRF Meteo. Only 2022 was warmer.

From a global perspective, 2023 will go down in history as the warmest year since measurements began, the weather editorial team of Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) wrote in a statement on Saturday. With regard to Switzerland, however, the longer cold phase in late fall in particular ensured that no new annual record was set nationwide.

2.5 degrees too warm

However, according to the data, new annual records were set locally, for example in Bern. The years 1961 to 1990 serve as a reference period, with temperatures in both the north and south of Switzerland around 2.5 degrees above the norm.

According to SRF Meteo, the temperature surplus is greatest in northwestern Switzerland and the western midlands. In some places, it was even slightly warmer in 2023 than the previous year.

The start of the year was already record warm: In Delsberg JU, it was already more than 20 degrees on New Year's Day.

Almost 40 degrees in August

According to meteorologists, no month was statistically too cold. The highest daily values were measured unusually late in the year: The hottest temperature was 39.3 degrees on August 24 in Geneva. The communiqué stated that this calendar year, however, was far removed from record cold temperatures.

The picture is ambivalent when it comes to hours of sunshine. In most places in Switzerland, the duration of sunshine was above average compared to the 1961 to 1990 norm, wrote SRF Meteo. Compared to the previous year, however, the result is modest: In many places north of the Alps, the sun shone around 400 hours less than in 2022.

There was a lot of rain in many places

It is fitting that 2023 was significantly too wet in Switzerland. In Sitten VS and Elm GL, SRF Meteo recorded the second wettest year for more than 70 years. In Chur and St. Gallen, the third-highest amount of precipitation since measurements began was recorded.
