The 24-year-old who ran over and seriously injured a police officer in Winterthur in October 2019 will remain in a psychiatric clinic. The Zurich Higher Court has confirmed the initial order for inpatient treatment.
The court found the Swiss man guilty of multiple attempted murder and other offenses. It imposed a sentence of 16 years in prison, a fine, and a penalty. The prison sentence was suspended in favor of a stationary measure.
The court largely confirmed the first-instance ruling of the District Court of Winterthur from March 2022. A request from the defense to convert the stationary measure into a measure for young adults was unsuccessful. The accused remains in the clinic, where he has been in pre-sentence detention for almost three years.
A police officer was struck by a vehicle.
In October 2019, a young man in Winterthur broke through a roadblock with a stolen car, hitting a police officer and seriously injuring her. A second officer was able to escape the danger zone just in time.
According to the psychiatric expert, the young man suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. It is possible that this was triggered by years of excessive cannabis consumption.
The prosecutor requested confirmation of the initial verdict. The defense attorney argued for a conviction of reckless serious bodily injury and other offenses, requesting a sentence of five years in prison and a fine.
