Italian police arrested a man on Tuesday who was attempting to cross the border into Switzerland with over half a kilogram of cocaine. According to a report by the Italian news agency Adnkronos, the man has several previous convictions.

The man had hidden the 548.75 grams of cocaine and 350 euros in cash under the driver's seat, writes Adnkronos. The cocaine was seized thanks to a drug-sniffing dog. Another package containing a small amount of cocaine was found in the 24-year-old's apartment.

The arrest was made possible by surveillance of the man, the report continues. According to the report, the man left his home in Lipomo in the Como region on Tuesday in a large off-road vehicle with Ticino license plates, which was registered to a car rental company in Balerna TI. The man was stopped shortly before the unguarded Drezzo border crossing.

The Italian police had been on the man's tail for some time, as he had multiple convictions for drug trafficking, property offenses and weapons possession and regularly commuted back and forth between Italy and Switzerland in new luxury cars despite his low income.
