At least 25 people have been killed in a serious traffic accident in Tanzania. A further 21 people were injured on Saturday, according to the authorities in the East African country. According to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) in Bern, a Swiss woman is among the injured.

The accident in the northern region of Arusha is said to have been caused by a truck that failed to brake and collided with two buses and a car in front of it. The driver of the truck was initially still being sought. Legal action is to be taken against him.

Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan has ordered that all injured people be treated free of charge, Tanzania's Health Minister Godwin Mollel said on Sunday.

Road safety is an issue in Tanzania, as it is in many other African countries. Last year, the country with a population of around 67 million recorded 1550 road deaths according to the authorities.
