A 78-year-old Swiss man has died in his cell in the St. Johannsen BE detention center. This was announced by the Bernese Jura-Seeland regional public prosecutor's office on Friday.

The exact cause of death is being clarified by the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University of Bern. The police were informed shortly after 9.50 p.m. on Thursday that the inmate had been found in his cell in a critical state of health.

Despite immediate first aid and subsequent resuscitation by the emergency services, it was only possible to determine that the man had died. According to the canton's website, the St. Johannsen open center is used to treat offenders with psychological problems or addictions.

A 39-year-old North Macedonian had already been found dead in his cell in Witzwil prison on Tuesday. According to the police, there were no indications of outside influence. Forensic experts are also investigating the exact cause of death in this case.
