Around 7000 readers are taking part in 365 events on this year's 7th Swiss Read Aloud Day (May 22). In addition, 34 celebrities are acting as ambassadors to convey the importance of reading aloud.
The most prominent ambassador is Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. "Our children are shaping the world of tomorrow. Our job is to broaden their horizons and help them develop their imagination. Reading aloud creates relationships. Reading aloud is a valuable source of inspiration for imagining future worlds," she is quoted as saying in a press release from those responsible.
She will be joined by dialect rapper EAZ, FC Basel goalkeeper Marwin Hitz, actor Dimitri Stapfer, his colleague and Unicef Switzerland ambassador Anatole Taubman and presenter Andrea Vetsch as ambassadors. In addition, 30 members of the National Council and Council of States will be taking part.
At the almost 400 events planned throughout Switzerland, the focus is on intergenerational reading aloud. Stories are read aloud to children, from the very young to over ten-year-olds - in almost every conceivable place, such as schools, libraries, bookshops, museums or even at home.
At Theater PurPur in Zurich, for example, there will be "language salad and alphabet soup". There will be readings in Ukrainian, Swiss dialect, Mandarin and Dari. Or at the Historical Museum in Olten, young and old can sit on the stage in a red armchair with their favorite book; a read-aloud karaoke is planned.
The Swiss Read Aloud Day was launched by the Swiss Institute for Children and Youth Media (SIKJM) in cooperation with "20 Minuten". Libraries, museums, publishing houses and bookshops organize the events in their regions.
