A chronology of the storms in Misox GR

A new analysis summarizes the storms in Misox GR. External experts presented it together with cantonal authorities in Lostallo GR on Monday. Strong thunderstorms on June 21 led to numerous debris flows in the southern Graubünden valley of Misox, which left devastation throughout the valley. Two people were killed. One person is still missing. A chronology summarizes the events from that June evening to the current restoration work.
June 21, 2024: After 6 p.m., heavy thunderstorms and rainfall lead to widespread flooding in the Misox. Rivers burst their banks and roads are flooded. According to the measuring station in Lumino, the flow rate of the Moesa rises from 50 cubic meters per second to almost 650. 200 metres of the A13 freeway between Soazza and Lostallo are washed away by the force of the water. In Sorte, three houses and three vehicles were washed away. Several dozen people are evacuated.
June 22, 2024: The canton of Graubünden announces in a communiqué that three people are missing, a fourth was rescued from the rubble.
June 23, 2024: One of the missing persons is recovered lifeless by the rescue services. The San Bernardino axis remains blocked and FEDRO is investigating for how long. Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis and the presidents of the governments of Graubünden and Ticino visit the region.
June 24, 2024: Axpo reports that the power plants and dams are in a safe condition.
June 25, 2024: To counter the traffic emergency following the closure of the A13, SBB announces a significant increase in services on the north-south axis.
June 27, 2024: According to an initial estimate, the damage caused by the severe thunderstorms amounts to 38 million francs, as the municipality of Lostallo announces at a press conference. Five buildings, including three residential buildings, were completely destroyed by the storm. Around 100 hectares of farmland were also damaged. To cover the remaining costs, which are not covered by insurance or public contributions, the municipality of Lostallo is opening a donation account. In the evening, the Graubünden cantonal police announce that the body of a woman has been found in the Moesa.
July 5, 2024: The A13 highway between Lostallo and Mesocco is partially reopened. The work is completed in record time.
July 17, 2024: The six municipalities affected by the floods set up a fundraising committee. The Vice President of the Moesa region, Graziano Zanardi, confirms that the municipality of Lostallo has collected 300,000 francs and the region around 800,000.
July 20, 2024: Around 190 volunteers from Ticino, Italy and German-speaking Switzerland help with the evacuation, cleaning of the meadows and restoration.
July 22, 2024: At a public meeting, the regional coordination group informs the population about the current status of the projects. According to a statement from the canton, the storm has a major impact on the local economy, particularly the tourism sector. 37 companies have registered for short-time working. The donation committee is chaired by National Councillor Anna Giacometti (FDP). She was the mayor of Bondo GR when the landslide occurred in 2017.
July 26, 2024: The region updates the donation figures. CHF 990,000 goes to the Moesa region, CHF 625,000 to the municipality of Lostallo and a further CHF 175,000 to the agricultural sector. The cantonal road through Sorte is reopened to one lane.
August 7, 2024: Start of work on the debris collector in Ria del Bianch above the severely damaged hamlet of Sorte, which will have a dual function: Storage of material and protection of the village.
30 August 2024: Work begins on debris collector 2 in Sorte, which together with the first collector will have a capacity of around 300,000 cubic meters. Work also begins on restoring the most severely affected agricultural areas. The authorities anticipate costs of two to three million francs.
September 3, 2024: At 5 a.m., all four lanes of the A13 freeway between Lostallo and Mesocco are fully reopened. The costs for the reconstruction amount to five to seven million Swiss francs. The Federal Roads Office assures that no further movement has been detected along the 120-metre-long crack in the ground near Mesocco.
September 10: The army transports donated fodder to farmers in the affected area. 1600 bales of hay and 300 silos are delivered, benefiting 25 farms.
October 9: A civil engineering team works on restoring two agricultural areas in Soazza and Lostallo that are still buried by the floods. The material is taken to the depot in Sorte.
September 27, 2024: 12 civil protection workers spend two days helping to clean up the Moesa River from San Vittore to Sorte. In total, they collect over a ton of mostly metallic material.
October 9: Two agricultural areas in Soazza and Lostallo are restored with the support of civil defense. According to a communiqué from the regional coordination group, the cost of restoring the approximately 100 damaged hectares amounts to CHF 2.8 million.
November 7: Work to restore the only spring in the municipality of Lostallo is almost complete, according to a statement from the Regional Coordination Group. The dams along the Moesa river downstream of the Sorte bridge are also almost complete.
