The newly elected Federal Councillor Beat Jans will earn around CHF 472,000 next year, as will his colleagues. He will also receive an expenses allowance of currently CHF 30,000 per year.
The Confederation also covers the costs of telecommunications for members of the Federal Council (landline, cell phone, PC). The fee for radio and television is paid by the members of the government themselves. Members of the Federal Council are entitled to a representative vehicle and an official car for personal use.
For private use of the official vehicle, 0.9 percent of the new price is charged per month. Each member of the government also receives a 1st class SBB GA travelcard and a GA travelcard for the cable cars in Switzerland.
The Federal Council's salary will be adjusted to inflation at the start of 2024. However, according to the Swiss government portal, there will be no real wage increase.
From next year, the retiring Alain Berset will receive a pension equivalent to half the salary of a Federal Councillor. Former Federal Councillors receive this full pension if they have been in office for at least four years or leave office earlier for health reasons.
If members of the Federal Council leave office prematurely for health reasons, the Finance Delegation of the Federal Assembly must approve the full pension.
As long as a former member of the Federal Council earns an income or replacement income which, together with the retirement pension, exceeds the salary of an incumbent Federal Councillor, the retirement pension is reduced by the excess amount.
