A ban on hate symbols, political funding, climate proposals and tax breaks for the rich are among the issues to be decided at the ballot box this Sunday. A total of 17 proposals are up for debate in eight cantons.
The canton of Geneva, for example, wants to introduce a ban on hate symbols such as the swastika in public spaces. The canton is thus ahead of the federal government, which also wants to ban Nazi symbols and other extremist signs nationwide. The canton of Geneva is also deciding on an extension of political rights for foreigners.
In the canton of Zug, a transparency initiative is under discussion that aims to disclose political financing. As an alternative, a less far-reaching counter-proposal will be put to the vote.
In the canton of Ticino, the maximum income tax rate is to be lowered in order to attract good taxpayers to Switzerland's sunniest canton.
Three cantons are currently debating energy bills: in the canton of Schaffhausen, an initiative aims to oblige homeowners to install solar panels on their roofs, and not just on new buildings. In the canton of Baselbiet, a new energy law is being proposed to increase the share of renewable energies in total consumption, excluding mobility, to at least 70 percent by 2030. And in Aargau, a climate article is to be written into the cantonal constitution.
In the canton of Fribourg, the issue is hospital planning and the associated financial injection of a total of CHF 175 million for the cantonal hospital. And in the canton of Schwyz, the broadcasting of cantonal council debates on the internet, as took place during the coronavirus pandemic, is to be given a legal basis.
