The Zurich city police have arrested a total of nine people during the unauthorized demonstration on 1 May. The police operation is still ongoing, the city police announced on Wednesday evening.
In the run-up to the event, various radical left-wing organizations had called for an unauthorized "Nachdemo" in Langstrasse. The participants gathered in the Hohlstrasse area shortly after 3 pm. According to the police, the mostly masked people then covered themselves with banners.
However, the demonstration was stopped by a swift police operation. Several people were stopped and checked by the police. In the meantime, however, a second, smaller demonstration formed, according to the police.
The group then moved via Molkenstrasse to Langstrasse, dispersed there, formed up again a short time later on Langstrasse and dispersed again when the emergency services approached. According to the police, two people were arrested.
According to the statement, several people were uncooperative and harassed the emergency services while they were being checked at Langstrasse/Hohlstrasse. They used tear gas. Several dozen people were checked, turned away and reported. Seven other people were provisionally arrested and taken to a police station for further investigation.
According to a reporter from the Keystone-SDA news agency, more than 100 police officers were present at the "Nachdemo". The situation was tense. Numerous onlookers watched the event. The Zurich city police had already recommended in advance on Platform X that people stay away from the demonstration and follow the instructions of the emergency services.
