Former Biel lay preacher Abu Ramadan wants to stay in Switzerland. He made this clear during his questioning before the Bernese High Court on Wednesday.

The 70-year-old Libyan has appealed against the first-instance verdict against him. The regional court in Biel had found him guilty of fraud and racial discrimination in 2022. It sentenced him to a conditional prison sentence of 14 months and an expulsion order of six years.

The man is said to have unlawfully received welfare benefits and called for hatred towards people of other faiths in a mosque in Biel. Abu Ramadan has always denied this. Today, he only goes to the mosque to pray and is no longer active as a preacher, he said on Wednesday.

The verdict is expected on Friday.
