From April 1, 2024, new vehicles in Switzerland must be equipped with an accident data recorder and new driver assistance systems. This was decided by the Federal Council on Friday and several ordinances were amended in line with EU regulations.
The Federal Council wants to ensure that new vehicles have the latest safety systems. The mandatory driver assistance systems are used, for example, to warn of drowsiness and distractions, but also for automatic emergency braking in the event of danger. They also help when reversing and turning.
The Federal Council states in its communication that personal data will remain protected. The amendments to the ordinance are in line with the Swiss Data Protection Act.
Improved bodywork elements, which will also be mandatory from April 1, should ensure that the impact is less severe in the event of an accident. This should provide better protection for pedestrians and cyclists.
Drivers of trucks and buses must also have a better field of vision so that they can see whether someone is standing directly next to or in front of their vehicle. Coaches and buses must also meet higher requirements in terms of rollover protection and fire safety.
Further amendments to the ordinance adopted by the Federal Council were proposed by the cantonal enforcement authorities or industry organizations. These include, for example, simplifications for conversion to electric drive or simplifications for the inspection of accessory rims not approved by the manufacturer.
