According to their parents, thirteen percent of young people in Switzerland did not receive swimming lessons at school. This was revealed by a survey commissioned by the Swiss Lifesaving Society of over a thousand parents across the country.
Swimming and water safety lessons are part of Curriculum 21, which is used in 21 cantons. This is according to a press release issued by the association this week. 87% of parents and 83% of head teachers surveyed rated these lessons as important or very important.
The survey also revealed that only 66 percent of principals use a water safety check (WSC) to test pupils' skills.
The Lifesaving Society is now calling for lakes to be used for swimming lessons. This is because, according to parents, a lack of indoor or outdoor pools is the reason for the lack of swimming lessons. The training of teachers should also be improved.
