Almost as many aircraft took off and landed at Zurich Airport in October as in the period before the Corona pandemic. There was also a significant increase compared to September.

In October, Zurich Airport recorded a total of 23,004 aircraft movements. This is 8.5 percent more than in the previous month of September. What is particularly striking is that the gap to the pre-crisis level is now only 2.6 percent. This is the smallest difference since the recovery of air traffic after the Corona crisis. In 2019, 23,625 aircraft still took off and landed at Switzerland's largest airport.

Over the year as a whole, the gap to the pre-crisis level has also narrowed further. A good 204,000 aircraft movements in the months from January to October represent a decline of 11 percent compared to the pre-crisis year 2019. At the beginning of the year, the gap was still almost 20 percent.

"The fall vacations, together with the summer vacations, are one of the main travel periods at Zurich Airport, so we expected comparable numbers to the summer vacations," an airport spokeswoman classified the increase in response to an inquiry by the AWP news agency. In addition, air traffic as a whole had continued to recover, especially with regard to the supply on individual routes. Destinations to Asia, however, continue to lag behind pre-crisis levels, even though traffic volumes here are slowly recovering.

The aircraft movement figures at Zurich Airport are based on statistics updated daily, in which all flights are recorded according to instrument flight rules. In addition to scheduled traffic, this so-called IFR traffic also includes cargo, business and private flights. However, the number of aircraft movements says nothing about the size of the aircraft handled and their utilization.

Zurich Airport will publish detailed passenger and traffic figures for the month of October on November 13.
