Amherd emphasizes the broad support for the Bürgenstock initiative

In her speech at the opening of the European summit, President Viola Amherd presented the results of the Bürgenstock Conference. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky announced the next steps for a second peace conference.
The Bürgenstock Summit is the only initiative for peace in Ukraine to receive broad support on all continents, said Amherd in her speech to the plenary of heads of state and government present at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England. To date, 87 states have signed the final declaration of the Bürgenstock Summit, the so-called Communiqué.
Even after the conference, other states signed the text, including those that did not take part in the summit, as the President of the Swiss Confederation said. Amherd saw one reason for the broad support in the fact that the Bürgenstock Communiqué is based on the United Nations Charter. Other peace plans would not, she said without naming a specific initiative.
First steps towards second peace summit
In his speech, Selensky thanked Switzerland for organizing the Bürgenstock Summit in mid-June. "Now the second summit is being prepared," he added. Working groups would soon be discussing three topics based on the communiqué for a peace solution: Energy security, food security and humanitarian support.
The Ukrainian president also pleaded for European unity. Europe must not allow itself to be divided by one person, he said, as this would weaken unity. Selensky did not mention a name, but spoke of a person who had traveled to the "capital of war". The European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) could solve their problems without this person.
At the beginning of the month, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban traveled to Kiev, Moscow, Beijing and to US presidential candidate Donald Trump for "peace talks". Orban was heavily criticized by the vast majority of EU member states for these trips.
