According to President Viola Amherd, peace work must become more inclusive. Women make an important contribution to peace solutions.
"We must recognize and strengthen this contribution," demanded Amherd on Wednesday at a meeting of the Security Council on the topic of "Leadership for Peace". Leadership also means setting standards, upholding them and holding accountable those who violate the law, said the President of the Swiss Confederation. The international community must not stand idly by and watch the Russian invasion in Ukraine, the Middle East, Sudan or Myanmar.
Appeal to Israel and Hezbollah
Amherd stated that Switzerland was deeply concerned about Israel's air strikes in Lebanon and Hezbollah's rocket attacks on Israel. She called for a cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomacy.
Switzerland is firmly committed to peace, stability and the protection of civilians in the Security Council. "Switzerland's resolution on the protection of humanitarian and UN personnel underscores our commitment," said Amherd.
More conflict prevention
Prevention is also particularly important. In the "Pact for the Future" adopted at the beginning of the UN summit, the states committed themselves to increasingly preventing conflicts instead of merely alleviating their consequences. According to Amherd, prevention includes development and security aspects, but above all respect for human rights: "Without the protection and promotion of universal human rights, there can be no sustainable peace."
Amherd, who traveled back to Switzerland on Wednesday evening, concluded her speech to the Security Council with a call for cooperation. "No one can stand alone. It takes partnerships, courage and trust between states," said the President of the Swiss Confederation.
