Amnesty International published its "Appeal for Freedom of Demonstration" on Tuesday. The right to demonstrate in Switzerland has recently been called into question by political initiatives and inappropriate practices by the authorities.

30 personalities from politics, civil society and law have called for the right to demonstrate to be better guaranteed in Switzerland. The appeal is a reminder of the importance and necessity of freedom of expression and assembly in a democracy, according to Amnesty International.

Freedom of demonstration is repeatedly disproportionately restricted in Switzerland, according to a press release. The cities of Basel, Bern and Zurich, for example, have imposed general bans on demonstrations in connection with the Middle East conflict. In Zurich, an initiative by the Swiss People's Party (SVP) is also under discussion, which envisages passing on the costs of police operations to the organizers of demonstrations.

Other problems include the dispersal of peaceful demonstrations and the inappropriate use of weapons, wrote Amnesty International. "Democracies are fundamental to a living, democratic constitutional state," said Markus Müller, Professor of Public Law at the University of Bern.
