The first Apple computer, Switzerland's first radio transmitter and an Enigma cipher machine: the Museum Enter Technikwelt Solothurn is exhibiting these technical marvels at its new location in Derendingen SO.
More than 30,000 objects from several centuries are gathered in over ten themed worlds. From old printing presses and the first Apple computer to the unique Spitlight cloud projector. According to the Enter Foundation, the aim is to make "the rapid development up to the present day tangible for all generations".
The "EnterLab" invites visitors to experiment within the exhibition: What is a computer language, how does a radio or a smartphone work? There are various workshops on offer for children, young people, schools and groups, from paper-making and screen printing to electronics, robotics and digitization.
Stifter arrives with "time machine
Felix Kunz, founder of the museum and President of the Board of Trustees, drove in a "DeLorean time machine" at the opening ceremony on Thursday. This is known from the movie "Back to the Future" and is part of the collection of movie vehicles on display.
To save money, 62-year-old Kunz did a lot of the work on the new museum building himself, including digging out the excavation pit together with two employees over a period of five months. "After two years and 6,000 hours of work, I'm looking forward to having a normal life again soon," he said.
20.5 million francs invested
According to the foundation, 20.5 million Swiss francs were invested in the new building and the new exhibition, supported by contributions from the Swisslos fund, among others. In addition to admission fees, events and rentals will also contribute to the financing.
Museum Enter has been in existence since 2011 and was located at Solothurn main station until last May. Following a land expropriation, the Enter Foundation decided to move the location to Derendingen, six kilometers away.
The new Enter Technology World, which opens to the public on Saturday, will have much more space than the former 2000 square meter "Enter - Museum for Computers and Consumer Electronics".
At the opening, Solothurn cantonal councillor Remo Ankli described the museum as "unique" and a "new beacon for the canton of Solothurn". The mayor of Derendingen, Roger Spichiger, was proud that the 10,000 square meter world of technology is located in his municipality.
