The appeal hearing in the case of the suspected bombers in Basel's Bruderholz district began on Tuesday at the Federal Criminal Court. The majority of the two accused refused to testify in court.

The two men only answered questions about their state of health. The second defendant also read out a personal statement. The 25-year-old said that he was innocent and did not understand why he should be sentenced to several years in prison. "I want my freedom back." It is "unbearable to be falsely suspected or convicted".

The two men were sentenced to several years' imprisonment in the first instance in November and appealed against the verdict.

The Criminal Chamber of the Federal Criminal Court found the two guilty of carrying out an explosives attack on a private house in Basel. The court also considered it proven that they had attempted to buy plastic explosives.
