Once again this year, around 280 farming families invited people to a brunch to mark the national holiday. Around 100,000 people took part in one throughout Switzerland, including Federal Councillor Beat Jans in Schüpfen in Bern and his counterpart Elisabeth Baume-Schneider in Saint-Pierre-de-Clages in Valais.
There were no incidents at the social events on Thursday, as a spokeswoman for the farmers' association, the organizer, told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
The average number of visitors per courtyard varied greatly. From a small brunch with 50 people to several hundred guests, everything was there. According to the farmers' association, each host family welcomes visitors in their own individual way. 1st August brunches on the farm have been taking place for more than 30 years.
