On Thursday morning, a barn fire in Richenthal, Lucerne, resulted in the death of around 400 piglets. One person was injured while trying to rescue calves from the fire and was taken to hospital. Seven to eight calves were saved, but the rest of the 400 piglets perished in the flames. The fire broke out at 10.30am and when the emergency services arrived, most of the barn was already in full blaze. The roof of the barn collapsed and the fire was slowly brought under control by 12.30pm.
