At least four deaths in the Alps over the Whitsun weekend

At least four people lost their lives in the Swiss Alps over the Whitsun weekend. Three deaths were caused by avalanches and one ski tourer fell to his death. The number of avalanche victims has thus risen to 23 over the winter up to Whit Monday.

Two ski tourers were caught and killed by an avalanche on the almost 3,800-metre-high Pigne d'Arolla in the Valais Alps on Whit Sunday. A third alpinist who was with them survived the accident and alerted the rescue services, according to the Valais cantonal police. The two climbers could only be rescued dead at the foot of the north face. According to the police, they had fallen around 800 meters.

A ski tourer was also killed in an avalanche accident on Piz Palü in the canton of Graubünden on Whit Sunday. The 38-year-old was swept several hundred meters into the depths and buried, according to the Graubünden cantonal police. His touring partner remained unharmed.

Also on Whit Sunday, a ski tourer fell from the Breithorn in Valais and was killed. According to the Valais cantonal police, the 26-year-old Swiss man slipped on an icy patch and fell around 300 meters. The two people accompanying the accident victim remained physically unharmed.

Since October 1, 2023, 23 people have been killed in avalanches in the Swiss Alps. The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF registered around 180 avalanche accidents up to Whitsun, in which over 260 people were recorded.
