The 15-year-old who attacked and seriously injured an Orthodox Jew with a knife in Zurich on March 2 was not known to the police or intelligence services in Switzerland prior to his attack. This was announced by the Federal Council on Monday.

However, the case is being treated with the necessary priority and intensity by the relevant security authorities, it added.

In response to a question from Zurich SVP National Councillor Barbara Steinemann, the Federal Council does not comment on the specific activities of the Federal Intelligence Service (FIS).

The perpetrator in Zurich is a 15-year-old of Tunisian origin who was naturalized in Switzerland in 2011. In a video in Arabic, he called for a "worldwide fight against Jews" and expressed solidarity with the Islamic State (IS) terrorist network.

The Federal Council reiterated on Monday that it condemned the attack. Measures are already being taken by the federal, cantonal and communal authorities to prevent and combat radicalization and terrorism. Last week, the National Council also adopted a motion calling for an action plan against anti-Semitism.
