Appenzell Ausserrhoden was the first canton to issue a learner's permit for smartphones. The pilot project will later be extended to all cantons and other documents.
Appenzell Ausserrhoden residents can obtain a digital learner's permit in preparation for the driving test. The federal government and canton presented a corresponding pilot project in Herisau on Friday.
The electronic learner's permit of the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden is recognized throughout Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. It is the state's first official ID document in digital form. It is to be introduced throughout Switzerland from 2025.
The authorities want to gain initial experience with the electronic learner's permit, as explained by representatives of the federal government. This is primarily with a view to the possible introduction of the electronic identity card (e-ID) from 2026 at the earliest.
