Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider expects around 28,000 asylum applications again next year - the same number as this year. However, she rules out outsourcing the procedures abroad.
"We have ethics, we have a constitutional state," said Baume-Schneider in an interview with the NZZ am Sonntag. And "we cannot pursue a symbolic policy that is not compatible with our legal foundations". She therefore ruled out outsourcing asylum procedures abroad at the present time.
"Chiasso is not Lampedusa"
She also expects around 28,000 asylum applications next year, "always assuming that the situation in the Middle East, for example, does not change completely". However, Switzerland still has the resources for a humane asylum policy.
Baume-Schneider recognizes that there is a part of the population that is concerned about the many people coming across the Swiss border. But at the same time, she notes that the population is still very supportive and willing to get involved. And despite the many refugees, Chiasso TI cannot be compared to Lampedusa (I).
15,000 open applications
It should also not be forgotten that the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) is still not in normal operation. There are currently 15,000 open asylum applications, whereas there would normally be 4,000. "We really need to get out of emergency mode here," said Baume-Schneider. Because it is essential that cooperation between the cantons and cities can be better planned again.
The Minister of Justice would also not be afraid of a Switzerland of 12 million people, provided that there was enough affordable housing, public transport was well developed and spatial planning was right. But at the same time, she does not see this as a goal worth striving for.
