Climbing enthusiasts can now climb up two bridge pillars of the Bernese Felsenau Viaduct. The facility was officially opened on Saturday.

14 climbing routes and more than 1800 climbing holds are available. Daredevils can climb up to a height of 40 meters.

The project was largely financed by the Bern section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). There was also a crowdfunding campaign. The city contributed to the initial costs.

Climbing is a fast-growing sport that has gained more fans with the World Climbing Championships in Bern, according to the city. With the climbing facility on the viaduct, a new sporting activity could be created without displacing any other use.

The Felsenau Viaduct on the A1 highway was put into operation in 1975. The Federal Roads Office (Astra) gave the go-ahead for the climbing walls in 2020.
