The Bernina Street will remain closed until Wednesday due to rockfall, longer than expected. According to the Graubünden Cantonal Police, the persistent rainfall is the cause. The clean-up and security work is also taking longer due to the rugged terrain, as stated in a statement released Sunday evening.

The cause of the rockfall on Thursday evening was reportedly the heavy rainfall in recent days. There is still a lot of loose rock material in the area of the collapse site, which could be set in motion by the persistent rainfall.

The police recommend alternative routes between the Engadin and the Puschlav, such as via the Malojapass or via Bormio over Livigno.

On Saturday, the Rhätische Bahn (RhB) railway line between Poschiavo GR and Alp Grüm was closed due to rockfall. On Sunday, the RhB network was back to normal and running without disruption.
