Bishop Charles Morerod Admitted to Hospital in Emergency

Bishop Charles Morerod was admitted to hospital on Wednesday for emergency surgery. The head of the Diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Freiburg had just given a statement on a pilot study of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church conducted by the University of Zurich. In a statement released on Thursday, the diocese wished him a speedy and full recovery. In an interview with the Neuchâtel newspaper Arcinfo, Morerod said he was ready to resign if he had made any major mistakes. He did not comment on the allegations against him, which include not intervening in cases of abuse. Bishop Joseph Bonnemain of Chur is conducting an investigation into Morerod and other members of the Bishops' Conference at the behest of the Vatican, following a letter from whistleblower Nicolas Betticher to the Apostolic Nunciature in Bern.
