The Swiss Bishops' Conference (SBC) elected Bishop Charles Morerod as its new President on Wednesday. The bishop of the diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg will hold the office from 2025 to 2027.
Joseph Maria Bonnemain, Bishop of Chur, will be Vice-President and Joseph Stübi, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Basel, is the third member of the Presidium, as the SBC announced on its website.
The new president is not without controversy. In October, the Vatican reprimanded several Swiss bishops - including Morerod - in connection with allegations of sexual abuse and their handling of it, including cover-ups. The Vatican accused Morerod of having reacted hesitantly and late to suspected cases of abuse.
