Bishop Charles Morerod is "gradually" resuming his duties following his emergency surgery in September. "I still have to take it easy," said the head of the diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg.

"The doctors advise me to be careful and rest," said Morerod in an interview with "24 Heures" published on Friday. Following his medical check-up on October 20, he had begun his gradual return to work.

However, he was able to follow most of the life of the diocese shortly after his operation, said Morerod. He only withdrew completely two days after the operation. After that, "I was consulted several times a week, at first only briefly, later in more detail," he said.

Operation due to bicycle crash

Morerod was admitted to hospital as an emergency on September 13 and underwent surgery because he had suffered a cranial hemorrhage following a fall on his bicycle several months earlier. He was admitted to hospital one day after the publication of a study by the University of Zurich on sexual abuse in the Catholic Church in Switzerland.

The bishop, who himself was accused in "SonntagsBlick" of not intervening after reports of abuse, had made a statement to the media on the day of his hospitalization and described the study as "shocking". He also stated that he would not rule out resigning if he had made "major mistakes".
