Interest in Black Friday or Singles' Day remains high in Switzerland. Younger shopping enthusiasts in particular are likely to stock up on bargains again this year.

According to the Profital Shopping Days Report published on Tuesday by Bring Labs and the Swiss Retail Federation, consumers intend to spend an average of over CHF 400 on Black Friday this year. On Singles' Day, they still want to spend an average of just over 300 francs.

High interest among boys

Interest in the campaign days has risen sharply, particularly among 18 to 24-year-olds: 43% of this age group attach greater importance to the shopping events than in the previous year. They also plan to spend more than the average: 25 to 34-year-olds specifically expect to spend a total of CHF 530.

According to the survey, the most popular categories this year again include clothing, electronics, furniture and furnishings. Consumers are flexible when it comes to where they make their purchases: most want to shop both online and in bricks-and-mortar stores on the campaign days.

The survey of 2800 Profital users also shows that although sustainability plays a role, price is often the deciding factor in the end.

Black Friday seit 2014

Black Friday gained a foothold in Switzerland in 2014 when the department store group Manor, for example, entered the battle for customers, which originated in the USA, with hefty discounts.

The name "Black Friday" comes from the fact that US retailers, who had posted losses in the year to date, were only back in the black on "Black Tuesday", the start of the Christmas shopping season. Since then, "Black Friday" has been regarded as the highest-selling day of the year in the retail sector. Singles' Day, on the other hand, originated in China.

Incidentally, this year Black Friday takes place on November 29, while Single's Day is on November 11.
