The prize for the best Swiss feature film of 2024 goes to the drama "Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry". The film picked up a total of three awards at the Swiss Film Awards ceremony in Zurich on Friday evening.

The asylum documentary "The Hearing" by Lisa Gerig was honored as best documentary. "Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry" picked up Quartz trophies for best film, best screenplay and best editing. Georgian director Elene Naveriani was visibly moved at the gala in Halle 622 in Zurich Oerlikon when the trophy for best film was presented.

The Swiss-Georgian co-production "Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry" tells the story of Ethéro, who lives in a small Georgian village. When she falls head over heels in love, she has to make a decision: either continue the relationship or lead an independent life.

Documentation on asylum procedures wins award

Lisa Gerig's "The Hearing" won the prize for best documentary film. The Bernese filmmaker recreates asylum hearings of four people whose applications were rejected - and gives an insight into how such interviews take place.

Gerig took the entire ensemble on stage with her. "My deepest thanks go to the protagonists of the film - you make it," said Gerig in her acceptance speech. According to the director, two of the people are still waiting for an asylum decision.

Like "Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry", the boxing thriller "Bisons" by Pierre Monnard also won three trophies. The film tells the story of a farmer's son who tries to save his parents' farm with illegal fights. Two of the actors from the film were nominated. Maxime Valvini as the farmer's son and Karim Barras as his brother. Barras ultimately won the award for best actor. He said he took the liberty of sharing the prize with Valvini. After all, it is a story of brothers.

Clear victory for composer

The other prizes went to cinematographer Joseph Areddy and film music composer Nicolas Rabaeus. The composer had an easy game. He was the only one nominated in the film music category, and his two musical scores from "Bisons" and "The Land Within" ultimately tied for first place.

He was very happy to have won the prize, said Rabaeus in his acceptance speech. "But my colleagues also composed great music last year and deserved to be nominated as well," said the composer

The Swiss-French actress Ella Rumpf was delighted to receive a Quartz for Best Actress. The 29-year-old had already received a César at the end of February. The jury of the French film award honored Rumpf as Female Discovery of the Year for her role in the film "Le théorème de Marguerite".

Special prize for assistant director

Film producer Robert Boner received the 2024 Honorary Award, with Culture Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider delivering the laudatory speech on Boner's life's work. The Federal Councillor recounted her only trip to the cinema with her parents to see the film "Les petites fugues", which Boner had produced. Not only had Boner created an extraordinary work, his life's work was an encouragement to all filmmakers to go their own way, said Baume-Schneider.

This year's special prize went to Sonia Rossier. She was honored for her work as the first assistant director in "Laissez-moi".

The Swiss Film Prize has been awarded by the Federal Office of Culture since 1998. Each year, the film prize honors the most outstanding Swiss films and the most important protagonists of Swiss filmmaking.
